Multilingual Learners (MLL)

CO-PLANNING TO CO-SERVE

OLD MODEL:

  • ML Specialists push into classrooms, providing support for ML students within the class.
    • Positives:  Two teachers in classroom can work together and also work with students in real time
    • Negatives:  Reactive rather than proactive, doesn’t give much opportunity for collaboration

NEW MODEL:

  • ML Specialists meet with teachers during common prep and PLC time to plan instruction that includes both content and language goals that are aligned with both content and WIDA standards.
    • Positives:  Encourages more collaboration, meets student needs, proactive
  • ML Specialists assist students in acquiring more language through elective interventions.

WHY THE CHANGE IS NECESSARY:

  • All students will benefit from having all teachers providing differentiated instruction and scaffolds.
  • All ML specialists will be able to help build capacity in content-area teachers to be able to support ALL learners at ALL times (with or without ML specialists present).
  • All stakeholders will be able to communicate and collaborate to create more effective and equitable outcomes for our community.
