ACCESS Testing
What is ACCESS Testing?
ACCESS for ELLs is an annual assessment required by the state of Wisconsin for students identified as English Learners (ELs). The test measures students’ English language skills in listening, reading, speaking, and writing. It helps us track progress and determine when a student is ready to exit English language support services.
Who Takes ACCESS?
All students at Nathan Hale High School who are classified as English Learners take the ACCESS test each school year until they reach English proficiency. This is part of state and federal requirements under the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA).
How is the Test Given?
At Nathan Hale, ACCESS is administered during the winter testing window, usually between December and February. Most students take the test online in a quiet, comfortable setting. Some parts of the test may be done one-on-one or in small groups, depending on the section. Our staff is specially trained to make sure students feel supported and confident during the process.
Why is ACCESS Important?
-
It helps teachers personalize instruction to meet each student’s needs.
-
It shows how much progress students are making in English each year.
-
It helps determine when a student is ready to exit EL services.
